RACE, TECHNOLOGY, AND DATA JUSTICE

We examine issues of race and racism within digital media and data-driven technologies

Led by Dr. Matthew Bui, we employ mixed methods research to understand: 1) how individuals and communities call attention to—and subvert—issues of power and inequality within and through data; and 2) the impacts of digital media and data-driven technologies within communities of color

Our Vision

raCIAL JUSTICE AS
data justice

Rooted in values of community-based research, we use interdisciplinary, sociotechnical approaches to explore the opportunities for, and obstacles to, racial and data justice within communities. Specifically, we examine the interplay between the digital and built environment, how data-driven tech mediates everyday life and opportunities, and how to effect viable interventions for data equity, access, and literacy. We approach data and technology from a broader and expansive view of its relationship with social and racial justice.
